FFA and OFA Encode Distinct Types of Face Identity Information

چکیده
Faces of different people elicit distinct fMRI patterns in several face-selective regions the human brain. Here we used representational similarity analysis to investigate what type identity-distinguishing information is encoded three regions: fusiform face area (FFA), occipital (OFA), and posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS). In a sample 30 participants (22 females, 8 males), measure brain activity elicited by naturalistic videos famous identities, compared their distances each region with models differences between identities. We built diverse candidate models, ranging from low-level image-computable properties (pixel-wise, GIST, Gabor-Jet dissimilarities), through higher-level descriptions (OpenFace deep neural network, trained cluster faces identity), complex human-rated (perceived similarity, social traits, gender). found marked represented FFA OFA. Dissimilarities identities were accounted for perceived Social Traits, Gender, OpenFace network. contrast, OFA mainly driven image-based (pixel-wise dissimilarities). Our results suggest that, although can both discriminate representation further removed image, encoding perceptual information.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Recent studies using have shown that face-responsive distinguish It however unclear whether these similar or ways. computations within response naturalistically varying revealed two regions, area, encode identity about faces. Although be decoded representations primarily contained gender, high-level visual features, whereas lower-level image features.

Distinct information critically distinguishes judgments of face familiarity and identity.
Accurately determining the familiarity of another and correctly establishing their identity are vital social skills. A considerable body of work has explored their perceptual and neural underpinnings and debate remains regarding whether they are dissociable, that is, separable parts of a dual process, or different aspects of a common retrieval process. Less is known about the specific visual in...
متن کاملThe Anterior Temporal Face Area Contains Invariant Representations of Face Identity That Can Persist Despite the Loss of Right FFA and OFA.
Macaque neurophysiology found image-invariant representations of face identity in a face-selective patch in anterior temporal cortex. A face-selective area in human anterior temporal lobe (fATL) has been reported, but has not been reliably identified, and its function and relationship with posterior face areas is poorly understood. Here, we used fMRI adaptation and neuropsychology to ask whethe...
متن کاملIdentity verification using speech and face information
This article first provides an overview of important concepts in the field of information fusion, followed by a review of milestones in audio-visual person identification and verification. Several recent adaptive and non-adaptive techniques for reaching the verification decision (i.e., to accept or reject the claimant), based on speech and face information, are then evaluated in clean and noisy...
